Many people will be looking for a family vacation this year that is affordable, supports the local economy and provides an opportunity to truly de-stress. We thought we would share one of our favorite places to retreat for inner peace, Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island. We’ve been taking our family to Doe Bay for the last 5 years when we need a quick, affordable getaway that soothes our soul. Doe Bay strips away the computers, news and noise of city life and returns us to a sense of ease in our bodies and spirits. We eat fresh oysters at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, hike around Moran State Park, sleep in, soak in the hot tubs and roast in the sauna, and detoxify from the electromagnetic hum of the city. We get quiet and breathe fresh, salty air. Doe Bay has been around for many years but a recent renaissance began back in 2003 when Joe and Maureen Brotherton bought it. The have revived the spirit of the resort with yoga workshops, an organic farming program, and cultural gatherings. Doe Bay can hold up to 200 people with a wide variety of rustic lodging from a hostel to yurts to camping to cottages (both plumbed and primitive). They have an organic restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner using produce from their own garden and other local island farms. The resort attracts naturalists from all over the world and provides a fantastic base camp for exploring Orcas and the other Islands. We have often considered hosting cleansing retreats at Doe Bay and have been encouraged to do so by their staff. If this interests you, then please let us know. Given enough interest we could design a weekend or week long event that focused on a cleansing diet, therapeutic massage and learning other natural cleansing techniques (including sauna and skillful hot tubbing) all in this tranquil environment. ![]() One of the many cottages on the property. ![]() The hot tubs and sauna look out over the Bay. ![]() A view from the beach looking out into the Bay.
